The Red Elephant’s mandate is to empower women in low-resource settings by removing and/or overcoming the barriers that they face during, and as a result of, menstruation. We do this by establishing and supporting projects that seek to positively impact the local population through the creating of reusable sanitary pads, and a greater dialogue about menstrual hygiene.
The Red Elephant educates women and communities about menstruation and adequate menstrual hygiene, engages them by providing materials and instructions on how to make reusable sanitary pads, and empowers them to be change leaders in their communities so that access to adequate menstrual hygiene management can be attainable for all!
Our projects serve a physical need in the community by providing girls and women with much-needed adequate menstrual hygiene management methods/products.
Materials used in the creation of the reusable sanitary pads are locally sourced wherever possible, which stimulates the local economy.
The pads can be sold by the individuals/groups making them, which can act as an income generator for entrepreneurs and social cooperatives.
The dialogue surrounding these projects helps reduce the stigma associated with menstruation.
